Donald Trump and CNN have been fighting for about a decade. He calls it fake news. It fact-checks him. Most days, if you had to bet on who is talking nonsense, you’d put your money on Trump. But every now and then, CNN picks a fight about nothing. * Saturday’s example: “Trump can’t stop insulting his own candidate in Texas. Why?” It’s a long CNN analysis about how the president keeps teasing Ken Paxton, the Republican running for the Senate in Texas. * Here’s what happened. Trump endorsed Paxton. Then, on stage at his party’s convention, he said some people may not like the way Paxton dresses. “I don’t,” he added. Paxton “may not be the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen,” Trump said, before calling him the greatest attorney general in America. * That’s it. That’s the scandal. A man roasting his friend’s outfit at a party. * CNN then spends paragraph after paragraph on the why. Is it Trump’s obsession with looks? A clever strategy? A plan to blame Paxton if he loses? It reads like a relationship column: why does he keep teasing him? * To be fair, there’s a real story buried in there. The Texas race is close, and it could decide who controls the Senate. That matters. But that’s a story about voters, polls and promises, not about a candidate’s wardrobe. * This is a family row inside the Republican Party. If Trump wants to mock the jacket of the man he endorsed, that’s between the two of them, and maybe a tailor. It doesn’t change anyone’s rent. * Meanwhile, the same president is fighting a war with Iran, promising $5,000 checks nobody can explain, and presiding over prices that won’t stop rising. CNN, you have plenty to work with. The candidate’s wardrobe can wait.
