Fox Asked Hard Questions About the Kabul Dead. On the Iran War Count, Silence.
Some stories about dead soldiers get the front page. Others get lost in the mail.
On September 18, the Washington Post reported that more US troops had died in the Iran war than the Pentagon had admitted: at least 22, not 18. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the report "DISGUSTING and FAKE." A week later the Post checked again. The Pentagon had quietly added 37 wounded sailors and Marines to its own tally, with no explanation.
Reuters picked it up. NPR picked it up. Even the Daily Wire covered it, to run Hegseth's side.
Fox News? We went through every article on Fox's daily site maps from September 17 to 26, plus its daily Iran war live blogs. We found nothing on the dispute. The closest thing was one line on September 19 repeating the official count: 18 dead, "according to AP."
Now rewind to April 17, 2026. Fox ran this headline: "Gold Star father says prior Afghanistan review smelled 'like a cover-up' as new look examines millions of docs." That was about the 13 service members killed at Kabul airport in 2021, under President Biden. Fox has covered those families for years, and it should. Their questions deserved answers.
So do these ones. A family waiting for the right number is not a Democrat or a Republican. It is a family.
To be fair, Fox did report troop deaths in this war as they happened. And the Pentagon says the gaps came from "temporary data disruptions." Maybe it's right. But you only find out by asking. In our view, a newsroom that asked loudly in 2021 should not go quiet in 2026 just because a different president is holding the clipboard.
