Both Teams Wore Black Armbands. Fox Called Only Ireland's a 'Stunt.'
Two football teams walked out in Serbia on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Both wore black armbands. If you read Fox News, one team was in mourning. The other was pulling a stunt.
The match was Ireland against Israel. It ended 1-1. Almost nobody will remember the score.
Here's the headline, on foxnews.com, in its OutKick sports section. Israeli players "wear armbands to remember terror attack victims as Irish opponents pull stunt again."
Start with Israel's armbands. They read "7.10," for October 7, 2023. That's the day Hamas attacked Israel and killed about 1,200 people. Remembering them is right. Nobody decent argues with that.
Now Ireland's. David Courell runs the Football Association of Ireland. Before the first of the two games, he said the players would wear black armbands "in recognition of all lives lost in the conflict."
All lives. That covers Gaza. The way we read it, it covers October 7 too.
The Irish players also refused to shake hands, both times. That, plus the armbands, is what Fox means by "stunt." A stunt is what a YouTuber does with a shopping trolley.
Fox is free to dislike the protest. It has already published a piece saying the Irish team "should be ashamed." But this one isn't marked as opinion. It's written up as a report, with the AP news agency credited at the bottom.
Even its own text is calmer than its top line. It says the Irish wore black armbands "in protest."
It isn't the first time, either. Before the first game, Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu left the squad. He said he believes "the killing of innocent people is wrong." Fox's report quoted that.
Then it added a thought of its own. It was "unclear," Fox wrote, if he'd had "any strong reaction" to October 7. In our view that's not reporting. That's a raised eyebrow in print.
Others managed plain words. After the first game, AP wrote that Ireland's players "wear black armbands and refrain from handshakes." After the second, Al Jazeera wrote that Ireland "refuse handshake with Israel and don armbands." You can tell what happened. Nobody tells you what to feel.
In our view, grief doesn't need a referee. You can mourn October 7 and mourn Gaza. Plenty of people do both before breakfast. Fox looked at two sets of black armbands and gave the kind word to one.
