NPR's Monday headline reads like a scheduling note: "U.S. and Iran launch new strikes after 3 U.S. service members are killed." Two countries, one shared verb, ninth consecutive day of American bombing since the Hormuz talks collapsed β and the grammar files it all under mutual.

Scroll down, though, because the body of the story does something worth slowing down for. The two Americans killed at Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base get full resolution: "1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas." Names, ranks, ages, hometowns. You could find their streets on a map.

The other side of the ledger arrives as an estimate: Iran says "at least 3,000 Iranians, many of them civilians" have been killed since late February β 168 of them children. That's one sentence. No names, no ages, no towns. Three thousand people, rendered at the resolution of a weather statistic.

To be fair to NPR β and this is the part most media criticism skips β the attribution is symmetrical. The seventeen American dead and the three thousand Iranian dead are each presented as somebody's count, not as NPR's own arithmetic. The asymmetry isn't in the verbs. It's in the resolution of the picture.

And some of that is supply, not bias. The Pentagon emails reporters names, ranks and hometowns; Tehran issues a round number. An outlet can only print the detail it's handed. But "we printed what we were handed" describes the pipeline. It doesn't defend the picture the pipeline produces.

For contrast, Fox's live blog had already moved on to the next chapter β "Trump weighs Iran war expansion as fresh US strikes target Hormuz shipping threats" β a headline where nobody is dead at all and the bombs fall on "threats," which conveniently don't have hometowns either.

NPR did more than most here: both ledgers, one page, honest sourcing. It's still worth noticing what that page teaches you to do β grieve two people, and skim three thousand.
