The state's own emergency language is a text from your mother. * Oregon Public Broadcasting, the local outlet, headlined it the way you'd expect: "Thousands under 'Go Now!' evacuation orders as Oregon wildfires burn over 1.1 million acres." Straightforward. Urgent. The kind of headline that assumes the reader might be one of the thousands. * Now let's walk over to the national front pages, Tuesday night, and play a game of find-the-burning-state. * CNN's homepage, top twenty stories: zero Oregon. Not buried — absent. The single wildfire item on the page? "Tracking the wildfires in Europe, in maps and charts." CNN has a wildfire tracker, with maps, with charts, lovingly updated. It is aimed at a continent 5,000 miles from the record-breaking fires in its own country. * NPR, same night: "Photos: Spain and France battle record wildfires." There's the word "record," gainfully employed — for somebody else's record. Oregon set one too this week. No photos. * And Fox News' US section — the page literally titled US — was leading with Savannah Guthrie's family kidnapping case, a "road rage suspect" in Iowa, a heroic teen lifeguard, and, we swear, "E-bike teen takeover swarms downtown city streets blocking traffic." A million and a half acres of an American state on fire could not crack the US page. E-bikes could. * To be fair to everyone: all of these outlets have covered Oregon's fires at some point this month. This isn't about whether the story exists in their archives. It's about what earns the front door on the night the state breaks its all-time record — and the answer, apparently, is fires with better scenery and a shorter commitment. * Here's our theory of the gap. Oregon's fires have been burning for weeks, and homepages cover events, not conditions. Spain catching fire is new this week; Oregon still being on fire is Tuesday. But 'still' is exactly how disaster works for the people inside it — and for 6,200 of them, "Go Now!" was the most important headline in America last night. It ran on OPB.
