Two things happened at Friday's cabinet meeting when Trump was asked about Ukraine building Patriot interceptors. One: he un-promised the licence he'd publicly promised Zelenskyy three weeks ago. Two: he performed a missile-defence impression — "bing, bing, bing, bing, bing" — recounting five Iranian missiles shot down over Jordan. Guess which one made Al Jazeera's front feed. * The clip, obviously. Al Jazeera's newsfeed item is headlined "Trump mimics sound of Patriot missile interceptions," and the write-up savours the comedy: he "joked about saying the right number of 'bings' to avoid comparisons to Joe Biden." It's a fun 40 seconds. It is also the only headline that cabinet meeting earned on Al Jazeera's feed as of Saturday afternoon. * Now here's Reuters, sitting in the same room, filing on the same meeting: "Trump says US has not agreed to Ukraine building Patriot missiles." No bings. Just the president saying the US must be "very careful about letting somebody build them," because "there's people that you give that technology, they can someday turn on you." The "people" in that sentence is the ally he stood next to at the NATO summit in Turkey in early July and promised a manufacturing licence — "We'll show them how to do it." * Al Jazeera can't claim it didn't know the stakes. On July 10 the grant got a full analysis headline — "Trump grants Kyiv Patriots licences: What's next in the Russia-Ukraine war?" — and their own reporting has long noted Patriots are the only weapon Ukraine has that can stop a ballistic missile. So follow the arc: when the licence was granted, it was a strategy story. When it was taken back, it was a blooper reel. * And the timing makes the filing choice grimmer. Sitting a few slots away on Al Jazeera's own front page, same day: "Russian missile attacks kill at least nine in Ukraine's Kyiv." Ballistic missiles — the exact things Patriots exist to stop — killed nine people the night before the president turned interception into onomatopoeia and quietly shelved the factory that would have made more of them. * To be fair, a president doing weapon noises at a cabinet meeting is news — conduct is a story, and everyone from the wires down clipped it. The problem is proportion: the noise got the headline, the no got a subordinate clause. A promise reversed without a headline is a promise reversed without a price — and "bing, bing, bing" is a very cheap way to bury a factory.
