Fox Says Turkey Was 'Once' a Headache. The Russian Missiles Haven't Moved.

Trump, standing next to Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday, announced the sanctions on Turkey are coming off — "We're going to be taking the sanctions off, OK?" — and said selling Ankara the F-35 stealth jet is "certainly something we will consider."
*
Fox's headline: Trump could hand the "prized stealth jets" to a "NATO ally once seen as alliance headache."
*
"Once seen as." Past tense. The headache, apparently, resolved itself.
*
Quick refresher on what the headache actually was: Turkey bought S-400 air-defense systems from Russia — the exact country the F-35 exists to worry about — and got expelled from the F-35 program in 2019, because parking a Russian radar next to a stealth jet is how the stealth stops being a feature.
*
Those S-400s have not gone anywhere. Turkey still owns them. Fox's own first paragraph concedes Ankara was kicked out "for its purchase of a Russian missile defense system." So between the expulsion and Tuesday, the missiles didn't move. What moved was Trump — to a palace dinner, where he declared Turkey "much more loyal than other countries that we think would be loyal."
*
Compare the neighbors. The Washington Post's headline kept the fight in the frame: Trump says "we will consider" the jet sale "despite opposition in Congress." CNN, meanwhile, got Netanyahu on the record against it, warning that Erdogan "calls openly for the annihilation of Israel."
*
Same jet sale, three tellings: a prize for a reformed friend (Fox), a half-promise Congress hates (the Post), the opening of a regional security fight (CNN). Only one of those tellings needed the word "once" to work.
“"Once" is a bold word for missiles that haven't moved.”
