Founded in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton — yes, the musical guy — the New York Post is America's oldest continuously published daily, which is objectively hilarious given it now runs headlines like 'HEADLESS BODY IN TOPLESS BAR' (1983, all-time champion). Murdoch bought it in 1976, lost it, and bought it back in 1993 reportedly out of pure affection. It bleeds money and doesn't care: the Post exists to set the tabloid agenda of America's biggest city and to needle Democrats before breakfast.
In October 2020, three weeks before the presidential election, the Post published the Hunter Biden laptop story. Twitter blocked the article's URL entirely — you couldn't even DM it — and locked the Post out of its own account for two weeks. Facebook throttled it. Most major outlets dismissed it as likely Russian disinformation. By 2022, the laptop's contents had been authenticated by the very outlets that had waved it away. Whatever you think of the Post's politics, it became the defining case study of platform-era suppression backfiring — and of who gets to decide, mid-election, what counts as a story.
