It's the verb of leaks, exposés and gender parties. When the man asking Congress for money announces his own number for his own war, that's not a reveal. That's an estimate. From the guy holding the receipts. * And about those receipts. NBC ran the same figure with a flatter verb — Hegseth “puts” the war at $37.5 billion — and then quietly detonated it a few paragraphs down: NBC's own reporting says the Pentagon's internal tally for the war so far is $80 to $100 billion, per three U.S. officials. Repairing bombed bases. Replacing destroyed aircraft. Restocking the weapons. The stuff that doesn't fit on the sticker. * So Tuesday's menu was: $37.5 billion if you ask the man selling the war, up to $100 billion if you ask the building he works in. That's not a rounding error. That's a second, unpriced war. * Senators did the math too. Patty Murray said she “cannot and will not support rubber-stamping a request to bankroll this war.” Gary Peters went with: “You, sir, are the failure. Not the men and women who are on that frontline.” The department, undeterred, would like $67 billion more. * It's a mechanic quoting you $400 while his own whiteboard in the back room says $900 — and the local paper covering it as “Mechanic reveals repair costs $400.” He didn't reveal anything. He offered you a number. The reveal was on the whiteboard, and NBC had to walk around the counter to read it. * A verb is a tiny thing. But “reveals” turns a lowball into a disclosure, and a funding pitch into a fact. The war's real price is still in the back room. The headline just read you the sticker.
