It's the people objecting to it. * One sentence of background, because you get the news elsewhere: UEFA's 55 members voted — unanimously, 55 to nothing — to boycott FIFA competitions if the sell-off plan goes ahead, Concacaf and Asia's confederation piled on, and one of FIFA president Gianni Infantino's own senior advisers resigned calling it "a bad deal for football." * Fox's opening line treats all this like weather: "The 2030 World Cup may be missing many of soccer's global powerhouses, with UEFA's announcement that it will be boycotting FIFA." May be missing. Like the powerhouses wandered off. No mention in that sentence of what, specifically, 55 countries are refusing to attend. * Now, where's the buyer in Fox's story? The name at the center of the revolt — the investor group expected to take a 20% stake — finally shows up in the second-to-last paragraph. And not even on Fox's own reporting: "According to the New York Post, Thrive Eternal is expected to lead the investor group... founded by President Donald Trump's son-in-law Joshua Kushner." * Two things about that sentence. First, the New York Post and Fox News share an owner — the Murdoch family — so "according to the New York Post" is Fox citing its own sibling to keep the name at arm's length. Second, and we can't stress this enough: that's the wrong Kushner. Jared Kushner is Trump's son-in-law. Joshua is Jared's brother. If one surname is load-bearing enough to make 55 countries walk out, it's worth getting the family tree right — especially when you've made readers wait until paragraph next-to-last to meet him. * For contrast, The Guardian's headline the same day: "Infantino increasingly embattled after senior adviser resigns over World Cup sell-off plans" — subject: Infantino, with the running tally that 143 of FIFA's 211 member associations now stand against the scheme. The BBC's analysis piece flat-out asks "Is Infantino finished?" after what it calls a seismic 48 hours. Same 48 hours on Fox: Europe is the one doing the flipping. * Who gets to be the subject of the verb is the entire game in a story like this. Put the revolt in the headline and the deal becomes scenery. But 55–0 is not the score of a rogue faction going off. It's the kind of score that makes you ask what they're all voting about — and who's buying.
