"Fury as UN reveals migrants are being granted asylum in Britain even when they may NOT be entitled to it." That's The Sun this week. Two small questions: who's furious, and when was this revealed? Buckle up. * Start with "reveals." The UN report The Sun is describing came out on March 9. Six months ago. This is your mate forwarding you a "BREAKING" story from a different season. * And the report doesn't say what the headline says. The UN's refugee agency checked 60 of the Home Office interviews Britain uses to decide who gets asylum. It found rushed questions and interpreters who summed up answers instead of translating them. Its warning cut both ways: some people might get asylum who shouldn't — and real refugees might get turned away. * That second half is in The Sun's own article. "Genuine refugees could be rejected" — their words, down the page. The headline just sawed the finding in half and kept the half that sells. * Think about the half they binned. One mistake gives the wrong person a visa. The other sends someone back to the thing they ran from. Guess which mistake never gets a furious headline. * So who's furious? Scroll to paragraph eight: it's Chris Philp, the Conservatives' home affairs spokesman, with a ready-made quote. That's the trick with "Fury as" headlines — the anger goes first, the angry person shows up a scroll and a half later. By then it feels like the whole country is fuming, not one politician with a press officer. * One more thing.
